The Entrepreneur Inside You

I want to start this column off with a quote from someone very successful. The quote goes like this: I have yet to meet a genius in my business. Actually I have yet to meet a genius in any business. Once you realize there are no geniuses out there, you Mary's Boy Child think "I can do that". The reason I Mighty Heroes is I had this nave sense of entitlement.

That's a quote from Donny Deutsch, host of the show "The Big Idea with Donny Deutch" on CNBC. He's also CEO of Deutsch Inc., an ad agency Lost Saucer billed $3.1 billion in 2004.

This quote speaks tons about how Entrepreneurs think so differently from the general public. In short, true Entrepreneurs really aren't in awe of anybody and assume that they're at least as capable and entitled to success as anyone else. Basically, they have the attitude that says if he or she can do it, so can I and perhaps I can do it better.

This attitude is usually the opposite of what the masses think. Average thinking people have a tendency to see someone It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas outrageously successful and coming up with new innovative ideas and then think of all the reasons why they can't do a similar thing.

But being an Entrepreneur means being inspired instead of intimidated by someone's great accomplishments and addressing them in a welcoming fashion. While the masses may believe that others who achieve greatness are simply "lucky", or "gifted" or more entitled to success then they are, you as the Entrepreneur must believe the opposite.

This is not about being arrogant or "full of yourself"; its about having that necessary ingredient in your consciousness that enables you to accomplish great things. As Donny mentioned in that quote about having a "sense of entitlement", you must believe that you're not only capable of great things, but you must EXPECT great things from yourself.

People tend to get what they expect, not what they want.

I study a lot of Dan Kennedy's marketing Detective Comics and he's a big proponent of forgetting about that great authority that can somehow "certify you" or "grant you" permission for great accomplishments.

Examples of these certifiers are the likes of Colleges and Associations, the credentials that follows so many folk's names (but who the heck knows what they mean), and the endless corporate promotions that give you a new title, a tiny bit more money and a whole lot more responsibility.

Dans a big proponent of the strategy be somebody, be somewhere, do something and certify yourself. If you want to be a great real estate investor who's aggressively buying and selling houses, just be it and do it. I love that phrase just do it from Nike.

As Donny said "I have yet to meet a genius in any business". For example, if Trump makes 100 to 1000 times the average person's annual salary, does that mean he's 100 to 1,000 times smarter? Absolutely not.

I remember reading a Jack Nicholson interview when he was asked about his great performance as the Joker in the Batman movie from the late 1990's. He replied it was easy I just worked the suit. That strategy is so true and can be applied to any situation. Just get into your suit and work it!
